The Western [Wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/) in [Jerusalem](https://www.worldhistory.org/jerusalem/) has been the center of Jewish learning and memory for over 2,000 years. As the only fragment of the Great [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) to survive the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) destruction following the [Great Jewish Revolt of 66 CE](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/823/the-great-jewish-revolt-of-66-ce/), the wall is omnipresent in the historical Jewish consciousness as it is the most sacred structure in [Judaism](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/judaism/). While originally built to support the western side of the Temple Mount, it is widely known as the Western Wall or *HaKotel HaMa'aravi* in Hebrew.
