## Image Caption

The Lion [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/), located in present-day Jaffa, [Israel](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Israel/), got its name from a lioness' skull that was found within it. This skull was apparently used in a ritual performed here at the time of the ancient Canaanites and from an altar that served in the worship of the Canaanite goddess Ashtoreth, who is depicted astride a lion. For centuries, pilgrims associated the site with the worship of the mythological [Andromeda](https://www.worldhistory.org/Andromeda/), the daughter of the king of Jaffa, who was rescued by the hero [Perseus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Perseus/).
