## Image Caption

Painting by Frank Dicksee (1853-1928 CE) titled "The Funeral of a [Viking](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vikings/)", showing a Viking being cremated on a ship pushed out to sea. The painting resides at the Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Historically, although [burial](https://www.worldhistory.org/burial/) became commonplace during the [Viking Age](https://www.worldhistory.org/collection/29/the-viking-age/), cremation on a pyre (not so much ship) was also practiced. Burying people in ships (such as the famous Oseberg Ship [grave](https://www.worldhistory.org/burial/) mound in Norway) seems to have been a luxury reserved for the wealthy since ships were so expensive.
