Standing on Schönbühl Hill, one finds the old [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) religious district at [Augusta Raurica](https://www.worldhistory.org/Augusta_Raurica/) in what is present-day Switzerland. It existed from the early days of the town. Around 50 CE, several small temples stood here. The buildings were typical of Gallo-[Roman architecture](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Architecture/) in this region of Roman Switzerland. In the late 3rd century CE, the [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) became a "stone quarry": parts of it were removed and reused elsewhere. That is why only the core of the temple podium has survived.
