## Image Caption

This jar has small beads around the neck and is decorated with red pigment and cord impressions. As regional rulers became more powerful in the [Yayoi period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Yayoi_Period/), they demanded higher quality ceramics. [Warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) also became more common, and in Western [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/) ditches and other defenses were built around communities from about 300 BCE onwards. Famous examples include Yoshinogari in [Saga](https://www.worldhistory.org/Saga/) prefecture and Asahi in Aichi prefecture. Earthenware, cord-marked. From Japan. 100-250 CE. (The British Museum, London).
