Coins of this design were the first issued by the [Roman Republic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Republic/) after 211 BCE. This issue introduced a new weight standard that would be the standard for [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) denarii until the 3rd century CE. The front design depicts the goddess [Roma](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roma/), while the reverse depicts [Castor and Pollux](https://www.worldhistory.org/Castor_and_Pollux/), the patron deities of [Roman cavalry](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Cavalry/) and equites, on horseback.
