## Image Caption

Artist's depiction of the Norse goddess Þorgerðr Hǫlgabrúðr (anglicised as Thorgerd Holgabrudr) facing the Jomsvikings' fleet. A [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) was dedicated to Thorgerd in Gudbrandsdal, Norway, in the 10th century CE, and in the sources she frequently crops up together with a certain jarl Hakon from Hálogaland, even being referred to as his wife. She was probably a sort of local deity in those parts. It is thought that [Lagertha](https://www.worldhistory.org/Lagertha/), [Ragnar Lothbrok](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ragnar_Lothbrok/)'s first wife as per Saxo Grammaticus' Gesta Danorum, may be inspired by Thorgerd.
