[Sculpture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Sculpture/) of [Charlemagne](https://www.worldhistory.org/Charlemagne/) (Holy [Roman Emperor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Emperor/) r. 800-814 CE) in the [Abbey of Saint John at Müstair](https://www.worldhistory.org/Abbey_of_Saint_John_at_Mustair/), Switzerland. The Abbey, which began life as a monastery, is located in Switzerland's Graubünden Canton and was constructed in the late 8th century CE. It was likely founded by the Bishop of Chur at Charlemagne’s royal behest (Chur was the traditional capital of Graubünden), although legends connect Charlemagne with this Abbey's origins in a more intricate way.
