Map showing the routes allegedly taken by the Great [Viking](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vikings/) Army that invaded the Anglo-[Saxon](https://www.worldhistory.org/Saxons/) Kingdoms in 865 CE, under leadership of such chieftains as 'Hingwar', 'Hubba', and 'Halfdene' (Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for 870-871 CE). These figures have been equated with the sons - [Ivar the Boneless](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ivar_the_Boneless/), Ubbe, and Halfdan (or Hvitserk) - of the legendary Viking hero [Ragnar Lothbrok](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ragnar_Lothbrok/). The Viking invasion clashed, among others, with King Ælla of Northumbria (r. c. 866 CE) as well as [Alfred the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/Alfred_the_Great/), King of Wessex (871-899 CE).
