Two [Viking Age](https://www.worldhistory.org/collection/29/the-viking-age/) oval brooches - also known as tortoise brooches - which were used in a practical way by [women](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/women/) to pin up the straps of their overdresses but were often decorated. They came in pairs - one for each dress strap - and are often found in female graves dating from the [Viking](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vikings/) Age (c. 790-1100 CE); because they are typically Viking, they can be used as identifying factors. These particular two reside at the Historical Museum in Oslo, Norway.
