## Image Caption

This gilt [silver](https://www.worldhistory.org/Silver/) fitting, which is possibly from a seax (an Anglo-[Saxon](https://www.worldhistory.org/Saxons/)/Germanic shortsword or dagger) sheath. The fitting, ending in an animal head with blue-glass eyes, is inscribed in the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc runic [script](https://www.worldhistory.org/script/). It was found in London and probably dates to the late 8th century CE.
