# Motte and Bailey Castle Diagram

A diagram of the motte-and-bailey castle of Huntingdon Hill, [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/). 11th century CE. Huntingdon was an urban centre with a mint, a market and several churches. The castle's construction was initiated by [William the Conqueror](https://www.worldhistory.org/William_the_Conqueror/) in 1068 to solidify his control over England. According to the [Domesday Book](https://www.worldhistory.org/Domesday_Book/), 20 houses had to be demolished to clear space for the castle, which was likely built by both soldiers and local labourers.
The castle also played a role in the rebellion against King Henry II in 1174 and it was besieged by Henry II's army, after which it was ordered to be destroyed.
