The Tropaeum Traiani is a triumphal monument built in 109 CE in then Moesia Inferior (present-day Romania) to commemorate [Trajan](https://www.worldhistory.org/trajan/)’s victory over the Dacians in 102 CE, in the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Tapae. By the 20th century CE, the monument was reduced to a mound of stone and mortar, with a large number of the original bas-reliefs scattered around. The present edifice is a reconstruction dating from 1977 CE. The monument contained fifty-four separate metopes with sculpted scenes of the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) campaigns. Most of these metopes are now in the site museum in Adamclisi.
