## Image Caption

Found in a cart rut near Laverstock in 1780 CE, this [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) ring is inscribed with the name of Aethelwulf (r. 839-858 CE). It features a mitre-shaped bezel with a tree and two peacocks. Diameter approximately 2.8 cm, mass approximately 18.5 grams. (British Museum, London)
