[Geghard](https://www.worldhistory.org/Geghard/) Monastery in [Armenia](https://www.worldhistory.org/armenia/) contains a number of churches, altars, and tombs, most of which are cut into rock. The monastery is widely considered the very peak of Armenian medieval [architecture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/architecture/). It was founded at some point in the 4th century CE. At its height in the 13th century CE, Geghard Monastery benefited from the patronage of Armenian and Georgian princely families, and it was a pilgrimage site. Among its reliquaries were supposedly the spear used by a [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) soldier to pierce the body of [Jesus Christ](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jesus_Christ/) as well as a wooden fragment said to have been a part of [Noah's Ark](https://www.worldhistory.org/Noah's_Ark/).
