[Geghard](https://www.worldhistory.org/Geghard/) Monastery in [Armenia](https://www.worldhistory.org/armenia/) was founded at an unknown date, but it is believed that the site was a place of worship among Armenia's pre-Christian and pagan population. It is likely that the monastery was first founded in the 4th century CE by St. Gregory the Illuminator, and the monastery was known as "Auyrivank" or "Monastery of Caves." The monks who lived at the monastery were known for their asceticism and learning, and the monastery contained a manuscriptorium, seminary, and even and academy of [music](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Music/). Although it was plundered by the Arabs in the 920s CE, Geghard Monastery rose to great heights of fame and patronage during the 13th century CE.
