## Image Caption

The Severan Bridge (also known as Cendere Bridge) is a [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) bridge located near the ancient [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Arsameia (today Eskikale), 55 km (34 miles) north east of Adıyaman in southeastern [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/). It spans the Cendere Çayı river, which was known as Chabines in antiquity. Built by the Sixteenth Roman legion stationed at Samosata (Samsat) in the last years of the 2nd century CE, it replaced an earlier bridge probably built under [Roman emperor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Emperor/) [Vespasian](https://www.worldhistory.org/Vespasian/) (r. 69-79 CE). It is one of the best-preserved Roman stone bridges in Turkey.
