This scene is part of the [Nile](https://www.worldhistory.org/nile/) [mosaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mosaic/) of Palestrina (c. 100 BCE), found in Palestrina, [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/). It portrays a group of Ptolemaic [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) soldiers in [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/) on the banks of the Nile. The soldiers are clad in typical [Hellenistic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenic_World/) equipment including Phrygian and Attic type helmets, tunics or armour made of linen (linothorax in Greek), and various shield designs common to Hellenistic armies at the time. Similar Nilotic settings were popular in Republican and Imperial [Roman art](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Art/) as a result of the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) fascination with Egypt's exotic [culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/culture/).
