Page showing the month of January in the Book of [Hours](https://www.worldhistory.org/Horae/) known as Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry (created c. 1412-1416 and 1485-1489 CE). It is frequently referred to as the “king of [illuminated manuscripts](https://www.worldhistory.org/Illuminated_Manuscripts/)” because of the grandeur and intricacy of the paintings. This particular page shows the exchanging of New Year's gifts within the household of John, Duke of Berry (in blue, seated, on the front right).
