[Aethelflaed](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aethelflaed,_Lady_of_the_Mercians/) fortified Tamworth with the construction of an earthen burh in 913, and it was also the place of her [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) in 918. The statue itself dates from 1913 and was commissioned in her memory.
