Aethelstan (also given as [Athelstan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aethelstan/)) - the figure on the left - reigned as King of the Anglo-[Saxons](https://www.worldhistory.org/Saxons/) from 924–927 CE and as King of the English from 927-939 CE. He is here depicted in the frontispiece of [Bede](https://www.worldhistory.org/Bede/)'s Life of St Cuthbert as presenting a copy of the book to [Saint Cuthbert](https://www.worldhistory.org/Saint_Cuthbert/) himself. The original manuscript is MS 183, f.1v housed at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
