The painting portrays the Greco-Macedonian king and ruler of [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/), [Ptolemy II Philadelphus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ptolemy_II_Philadelphus/) within the famous Library of [Alexandria](https://www.worldhistory.org/alexandria/). Historically, [Ptolemy II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ptolemy_II_Philadelphus/) was a devoted patron of the arts responsible for the foundation and patronage of the Library and its adjoining buildings.
