This beautifully crafted head portrays an "Aethiopian", or black African, and is made out of black [bronze](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/bronze/), [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/), obsidian and carnelian. The piece was once a part of an ornate object like a serving dish although it has been broken off at some point between Antiquity and today. Crafted in [Hellenistic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenic_World/) style, the piece comes from [Ptolemaic Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ptolemaic_Egypt/) and dates to roughly 332-30 BCE. It is now a part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
