The Niger River is the most important river in West [Africa](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/africa/), and is the third longest river in Africa after the [Nile](https://www.worldhistory.org/nile/) River and Congo River. Known for its distinctive "boomerang" shape, the Niger River flows from the Guinea Highlands to the Sahara before making a sharp turn back to the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. Given the river's historical importance to [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/) and [agriculture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Agriculture/) in the region, the Niger has been at the heart of the most renowned civilizations in West Africa such as the [Mali Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mali_Empire/).
