## Image Caption

This fragment of a head dates to c. 1400 CE and is made of terracotta. It was found near Jukun and is named accordingly. From the 14th-18th century CE, an aggressive [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) called Kororofa held power on the Adamawa plateau of northern Nigeria. Each king ruled by divine right and enjoyed absolute power, but only for a period of seven years, after which a new king was chosen and given power. Whether the Jukun peoples who live there today are descended from the warriors of Kororofa is unknown. ([Iris](https://www.worldhistory.org/Iris/) & B.
