## Image Caption

The Byodoin [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) in Uji, [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/) dates from the late-[Heian period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Heian_Period/), and it served as the residence of the influential minister [Fujiwara](https://www.worldhistory.org/Fujiwara_Clan/) no Michinaga (966-1028 CE). It was originally built in 998 CE. The most famous portion of the temple is the "Phoenix Hall," which is a National Treasure and appears on the Japanese 10 yen [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/). Inside the Phoenix Hall is an ancient [sculpture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Sculpture/) of the Amida [Buddha](https://www.worldhistory.org/Siddhartha_Gautama/), which was made by the famous Japanese Jocho (d. 1057 CE).
