[Kinkakuji](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kinkakuji/) [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) or the "Temple of the Golden Pavilion" was constructed in the 1390s CE as the retirement villa for [Shogun](https://www.worldhistory.org/Shogun/) Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (r. 1368–1394 CE). While [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/) suffered [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/), [plague](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/plague/), deteriorating economic conditions, and severe famine, Yoshimitsu lived in splendid isolation at the Kinkakuji Temple. Today, the Kinkakuji Temple is believed by many to be the finest structure of traditional Japanese [architecture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/architecture/).
