## Image Caption

These beads come from [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/) and date from the [Kofun period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kofun_Period/) (250-538 CE) in Japanese history. In the [Kofun](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kofun/) Period beads of various shapes and materials were worn as fashion accessories, used in rituals, and buried in tombs. They include, for example, both small and large beads, cylindrical beads, comma-and jujube-shaped beads, and angular cut beads. Different kinds of beads were created at different times, and they were combined in various ways depending on the individual who wore them and on the ritual in which they were used.
