# The Louvre

## Image Caption
The Louvre was built in the 12th century CE as a fortress, but the majority of that structure is gone. It served as home to the Queen and King of France until 1682 CE when [Louis XIV](https://www.worldhistory.org/Louis_XIV_of_France/) moved to Versailles. In 1793 CE it opened as a museum and has been a museum ever since.
