This is one of 60 scrolls from a transcription of the "Avatamsaka [Sutra](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sutra/)." Ruled lines in [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) pigment segment the paper, which is decorated with flakes of [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/). At some point, the top and bottom of this scroll were burnt in a fire with the damage resulting in a strange visual effect when viewing the scroll today. The red seal of Senpukuji [Temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) is Kawachi province (now Osaka prefecture) is found at the beginning, as this is where the scroll was passed down through the ages. This sutra is made of decorated paper with ink, and it dates from 12th-century CE [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/). (Tokyo National Museum)
