## Image Caption

Equivalent to four drachmae, this [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) is perhaps the most beautiful issued by the [Gela](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gela/) mint, made by an unidentified engraver named as the "Master of Sosipolis" (440 BCE). The characteristic of this tetradrachm is the presence of a female figure who crowns the anthropomorphic bull (which represents the namesake river [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) of the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/)). The name "Sosipolis" is an epithet of a male deity or as a person's name. "Sosipolis" in [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) meant "saviour of the city".
