One of the most magnificent gospels in the Georgian language is undoubtedly the Alaverdi Gospels, which was completed in 1054 CE. It is the only Georgian manuscript to contain a mandylion, an impression of the face of the Savior on a shroud. Made of leather and metal, the cover is decorated with a painted icon of Jesus Christ, which was later inserted into a silver-chased frame featuring previous stones and cloisonné enamel images of St. George. (Those were created in the 11-12th century CE.) Holy objects were kept in the sockets on the cover. The cover dates from the late Middle Ages. (Georgian National Museum, Tbilisi)
