## Image Caption

The ancient Smbataberd Fortress (or "castle") dates from the 5th century CE and lies in the Vayots Dzor Province of [Armenia](https://www.worldhistory.org/armenia/). Well preserved, the ruins of citadels, barracks, water pools, and former dwellings for soldiers remain at Smbataberd Fortress. It was finally abandoned in the 17th century CE due to [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) between the [Ottoman Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ottoman_Empire/) and Safavid [Persia](https://www.worldhistory.org/Persia/).
