Painting by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg from 1810 CE depicting a scene from [Norse mythology](https://www.worldhistory.org/Norse_Mythology/) in which [Loki](https://www.worldhistory.org/Loki/) is punished by the gods for his hand in the [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) of [Baldr](https://www.worldhistory.org/Baldr/). A serpent is suspended above his head, dripping poison onto him, but his wife Sigyn catches the poison in a bowl. Only when she leaves to empty the bowl does the poison drip onto Loki's face, causing him to shiver so violently that the earth quakes.
