This lithograph from Frederick Catherwood's Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan depicts the so-called `Nunnery Quadrangle' at the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of [Uxmal](https://www.worldhistory.org/Uxmal/). The exterior and interior of the quadrangle are intricately and elaborately decorated with carvings and reliefs exhibiting great skill. The building is also known as `La Casa de las Monjas'(the house of the nuns)a name the Spanish gave to it. The original [Maya](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Maya/) name of the building, and its purpose, is not known.
