Although Cihuacoatl was later known in [Aztec](https://www.worldhistory.org/Aztec_Civilization/) [mythology](https://www.worldhistory.org/mythology/) as the "snake woman," she was also a fertility goddess and a goddess of motherhood. This statue comes from the Veracruz [culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/culture/), which lived along the Gulf Coast in what is present-day Mexico. This specimen was created c. 600-900 CE during the Classical era. It is made from cut stone. (Musée du Cinquantenaire, Brussels)
