Rostrum from a [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) warship used in the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of the Aegates Islands. C. 250-241 BCE. Soprintendenza del Mare, (National Maritime Museum, Sydney Australia). Eleven rostra have been recovered so far from the site of the Battle of the Aegates Islands fought on 10 March 241 BCE. This one bears an image of the goddess Victory and, in [archaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Archaic/) Latin [script](https://www.worldhistory.org/script/), the names of the two Roman magistrates (quaestors), who approved its manufacture - Gaius Papirius and Marcus Publicius.
