The Toshodai-ji is a [Buddhist](https://www.worldhistory.org/buddhism/) [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) of the Risshu sect in [Nara](https://www.worldhistory.org/Nara/), [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/). Founded in 759 CE by the Chinese monk Ganjin, it boasts the largest [Nara period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Nara_Period/) building that has survived. This is the Main Hall or Kondo which has a distinctive facade of eight wooden columns.
