The Chumon or central gate and five-storey pagoda of the [Buddhist](https://www.worldhistory.org/buddhism/) [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) [Horyuji](https://www.worldhistory.org/Horyuji/), [Nara](https://www.worldhistory.org/Nara/), [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/). It is the most important Buddhist temple in Japan and was first built in 607 CE by [Prince Shotoku](https://www.worldhistory.org/Prince_Shotoku/) during the [Asuka Period](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asuka_Period/). The temple was destroyed by fire in 670 CE but rebuilt by 710 CE. It has the oldest wooden buildings in Japan and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
