## Image Caption

Marble statue of [Scylla](https://www.worldhistory.org/Scylla_and_Charybdis/), a monstrous sea goddess who haunted the rocks of a narrow strait opposite the whirlpool daemon [Charybdis](https://www.worldhistory.org/Scylla_and_Charybdis/) (Kharybdis). Ships that sailed too close to her rocks would lose six men to her ravenous, darting heads. The statue was found in the Nymphaeum of the [theatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/theatre/) at [Ostia Antica](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ostia/) ([Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/)).
