After [Christianity](https://www.worldhistory.org/christianity/) became the state [religion](https://www.worldhistory.org/religion/) of the [Roman Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Empire/), pagan worship was persecuted, including the cult of the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) Mithras. Today we know little about the beliefs and practices of this cult. However, many reliefs and sculptures have survived that depict Mithras. This image was taken at the National Museum of Australia in the British Museum travelling exhibition A History of the World in 100 (and 1) Objects.
