A wide-spread [silver](https://www.worldhistory.org/Silver/) [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/) existed in the [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/) before coins were introduced. Silver coins continued to follow these routes, and mixed hoards of ingots and coins were buried across the [Near East](https://www.worldhistory.org/Near_East/) and [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/) between 550 to 475 BCE. These ingots were found in [Syria](https://www.worldhistory.org/syria/), together with coins produced in [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/), [Turkey](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/), and [Cyprus](https://www.worldhistory.org/cyprus/). Four silver ingots, probably made in the area of modern Syria, circa early 400s. (The British Museum, London).
