[Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) coins were set into rings, to be worn. Decorative frames were added to turn others into brooches. The image of the emperor was believed to be a good luck charm, so it made sense to carry it around all the time. Brooch made from a [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) of Honorius (Flavius Honorius [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/)), Emperor of the [Western Roman Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Western_Roman_Empire/), reigned 393-423 CE, minted in [Constantinople](https://www.worldhistory.org/Constantinople/) during his reign.
