The image of the emperor was believed to be a good luck charm, so it made sense to carry it around all the time. Gold [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) of Emperor [Marcus Aurelius](https://www.worldhistory.org/Marcus_Aurelius/) (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/), reigned 161-180 CE), circa 167 CE, perhaps mounted as a ring in 200s CE.
