## Image Caption

The rebel Carausius ([Marcus Aurelius](https://www.worldhistory.org/Marcus_Aurelius/) Mausaeus Valerius Carausius) declared himself emperor, making [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/) his base. Although he had no authority in [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/), he stressed his [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) identity by citing the poet [Virgil](https://www.worldhistory.org/virgil/) on his coins. He also used Roman symbols, such as the wolf and twins. Upper image: [Gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) aureus [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) of Carausius, from London, [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/), circa 293 CE. From the Cracherode Collection. Lower image: Radiate coin of Carausius, from London, England, circa 286-293 CE. G. Barnett bequest. (The British Museum, London).
