Roman Republican coins did not usually depict living people, although a statue of the politician [Sulla](https://www.worldhistory.org/sulla/) appeared on a [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/) during his lifetime. The son of [Pompey the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/pompey/) adapted a traditional coin design by giving the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) [Janus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Janus/) the features of his deceased father.
