## Image Caption

Early Indian coins were made by cutting sheets of [silver](https://www.worldhistory.org/Silver/) into pieces and marking each piece with one or more symbols using small punches. As there are no portraits or inscriptions, the coins are now known by numbers. This [coin](https://www.worldhistory.org/coinage/), for example is known as "Series I Type VIII". From [Magadha](https://www.worldhistory.org/Magadha_Kingdom/), modern-day Northern [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/). 350-300 BCE. (The British Museum, London).
