# Decorative Glass Medallion Depicting Christ

## Image Caption

This glass disc came from the base of a drinking vessel, which may have been made as a wedding gift. Many such discs have been found in the catacombs of [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/), suggesting that when one of a married couple died, the vessel's decorative base was cut out and placed over the [grave](https://www.worldhistory.org/burial/) as a memorial. This glass depicts a bust of Christ within a square and then a lozenge. He wears a tunic and mantle fastened with a circular brooch. There is an inscription with five dots on both sides of the head. 4th century CE. From Rome, Lazio, [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/). (The British Museum).
