This [bronze](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/bronze/) head comes from a larger than life size statue. The statue probably stood in a public space in [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) London, perhaps in the forum. It may have been put up to commemorate [Hadrian](https://www.worldhistory.org/hadrian/)'s visit to [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/) in 122 CE, during which he ordered the construction of a [wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/) to defend the north of the province. Hadrian (reigned 117-138 CE) travelled widely in the [Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/), and there are many marble statues of him, but this bronze is a rare survival. 2nd century CE. Found in the River Thames at London Bridge, in 1834 CE. (British Museum, London)
