## Image Caption

Three separate elements were painted upon the [wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/) of a structure near the monastic complex of Wadi Sarga. The central scene, executed in red outline, depicts the saints Ananias, Azarias, and Misael, known as the "three children in the furnace", being delivered from [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) by burning by the angel. The text below refers to martyrs from the [Egyptian](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Egyptian/) town of Samalut. Large-scale depictions of Saints Damian and Cosmas, accompanied by their brothers Leontios, Eupredios, and Anthinmos were subsequently added to the wall-painting. After surviving torture by burning, here indicated by the palm fronds around their feet, they had been martyred during the persecutions of [Diocletian](https://www.worldhistory.org/Diocletian/) in the late 3rd century CE. Stucco, 6th century CE. From Wadi Sarga, modern-day Asyut, [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/). Gift of the [Byzantine](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Byzantine/) Research Fund(The British Museum, London).
